Marisa Clapp Named To Verizon Academic All-America First Team
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., June 19, 2003 – Springfield College junior Marisa Clapp was named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America College Division Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country First Team, announced today.

Clapp, who hails from Charlton, Mass., becomes the fifth student-athlete in Springfield College history to earn First Team Academic All-America honors. She is just the second female athlete to garner this award. Barbara Swallow, who was also a star on the SC women’s track & field and cross country teams, accomplished this feat in the 2000-2001 season.

This is the first time that two Springfield College student-athletes have earned First Team Academic All-America honors in the same academic year. Senior offensive lineman Ben Bristol (South Hadley, Mass.) was awarded Academic All-America honors in football in November.

Clapp was a second-team Verizon Academic All-American in 2002. She placed seventh in the 1,500-meter event (4:32.98) at the NCAA Division III Championships (May 24), earning her fifth-career All-America title. Earlier in the season, Clapp was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year after winning the 800, 1,500, and 5,000-meter events at the NEWMAC Track & Field Championships (April 27). In the fall, she finished 18th at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship (Nov. 23), and earned NEWMAC Runner-of-the-Year honors in women’s cross country for the second consecutive season. Clapp carries a 3.95 grade point average (g.p.a.) as a sports management major.

To be eligible for the Verizon Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must have earned a spot on his all-district team. The student-athlete must have a minimum 3.2 g.p.a. and be a starter or significant reserve on his team. The team is voted on by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSida).
