Baseball Downs WPI, 6-2, Behind Three-Run Sixth Inning

WORCESTER, Mass., April 11, 2006 - Springfield College senior second baseman Steve Hunt (West Hartford, Conn.) collected three hits and two runs batted in (RBI) as the Pride defeated host WPI, 6-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball contest this afternoon. With the win, the SC evens its record to 11-11 (4-3 NEWMAC), while WPI falls to 10-13 and 2-4 in conference play.

Sophomore first baseman Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) started the scoring for the Pride on a double steal in the second before Hunt tallied an RBI single an inning later. SC added a run in the fifth on a Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) single to center before taking control of the game with a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by a Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.) two-run single and run-producing hit by Hunt to center field.

Senior right-hander Carl Longo (Manchester, N.H.) picked up the victory to improve to 2-1. He went the first five innings plus, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two. Freshman lefty Jimmy Lisowski (Warwick, Mass.) gave the Pride three solid innings of relief, fanning three while yielding just one hit.

Matt Fiore (Wakefield, Mass.) and Scott McNee (Falmouth, Mass.) both tallied two hits for the Engineers, while Fiore and Jon Quintero (Miami, Fla.) each picked up an RBI. WPI left 12 runners on base during the final six innings.

Starting pitcher Paul Ragaglia (West Newbury, Mass.) took the loss to drop to 4-2 on the season. Brendan Devereaux (Holden, Mass.) kept WPI in the game by tossing three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.

The Pride will next travel to Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) tomorrow afternoon, April 12th, in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference start time.
