Game Two Boxscore/Play-by-Play
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 28, 2006 – Springfield College freshman centerfielder Angela Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) went 2-for-4 in the second game with a double and two RBIs, but it was the Jumbos of Tufts University which defeated the Pride in a doubleheader this afternoon at Potter Field in SC’s 2006 home-opener.
Tufts took advantage of five Pride errors in game one to win by a score of 11-1 in six innings, as the Jumbos completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory in game two. Tufts improves to 6-8 overall on the season, as SC drops to 6-8 while remaining 1-1 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
In the second game, the Pride took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double to left from Atkins. Atkins brought home sophomore second baseman Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.), who reached on a double to right field to begin the inning. Fumicello went 1-for-2 in the game with a walk.
The Jumbos proved to be too much for SC, however, as Tufts hit three home runs in the second game to take the 8-5 decision. Sophomore second baseman Danielle Lopez homered to right field to tie the game at one apiece in the top half of the third inning, as freshman designated hitter Maya Ripecky then hit a two-run shot in the top of the fourth.
Freshman first baseman Cara Hovhanessian hit a home run in the top half of the fifth inning for the Jumbos. On the day, Lopez went 4-for-6 in the two games to lead Tufts with two RBIs and five runs scored.
