Women's Lacrosse Runs Past Smith, 17-5, In NEWMAC Action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 27, 2004 – Springfield College junior forward Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) scored five goals while sophomore forward Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) added four goals and two assists to lead the Pride to a 17-5 win over Smith College in NEWMAC women’s lacrosse action on Benedum Field.

Smith jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by junior forward Molly Mulligan (Troy, N.Y.) at the 28:51 mark, and senior forward Mary Kathryn Sagaria (Columbus, Ohio) at 23:46. Springfield would answer with 12 unanswered goals over the next 22 minutes, including all four of Carmody’s tallies, as SC led, 12-2, at halftime.

Looney opened the second half with her third goal of the game at the 28:23 mark, before two-straight Smith goals by Mulligan at 25:59, and Sagaria at 24:25, cut the Pride lead to 13-4.

SC (4-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) would score four of the game’s final five goals en route to its fourth-straight win.

Smith (1-2, 0-2 NEWMAC) senior goalie Bonnie Ewald (Putney, Vt.) made 17 stops for the Pioneers.

Springfield continues its NEWMAC schedule, taking on host Wellesley at 1:00 on Saturday (April 3).
