SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 29, 2006 – Springfield College junior quad-captain Michael Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) scored a major decision in his 141-pound match (13-5), but it wasn’t enough to lift the 20th-ranked Pride as it fell to the seventh-ranked College of New Jersey Sunday afternoon, 25-13, at Springfield College’s Blake Arena.
With the loss, Springfield falls to 8-8, and the victory lifts The College of New Jersey to 8-1 on the season.
Springfield never led in the meet. In the 121-pound match, Lion senior Brian Dempsey pinned Pride freshman Matt Fortunato (Farmingdale, N.J./Farmingdale) in 1:26 giving the Lions an early 6-0 advantage they wouldn’t look back on. In the 149-pound match, Pride junior Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) scored a thrilling three-point decision (6-5) over Lion freshman John Biango in the waning minutes of the third period.
The Pride also received victories in the 197-pound match, as senior quad-captain Jason Leckey (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) won a 6-4 bout over TCNJ sophomore Brett Jankos, and in the 184-pound match when SC sophomore Elliot Smith (Richville, N.J./Gouverneur) downed freshman Greg Osgoodby, 6-2.
The Pride wrestled the Lions very close throughout the meet, but fell behind early and couldn’t gain enough momentum to regain the lead. Smith’s and Leckey’s late victories offered a formidable ending, getting the Pride within six points going into the heavyweight match, but in the end, SC couldn’t pull it out. The Pride will next host Plymouth State, Trinity, and Johnson & Wales in a quad-meet on Saturday afternoon, February 4, in a 12:00 p.m. start at Blake Arena.
