CAMBRIDGE, MASS., April 22, 2006 – Springfield College senior designated player Sarah Bagierek (Douglas, Mich.) went a combined 6-for-8 and recorded 2 RBI as the Pride (21-18, 9-7) took two from the Engineers of MIT (4-20, 2-14) this afternoon, 13-1 and 6-2, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference doubleheader at MIT’s Briggs field.

In the first frame, Amanda Johansson (Eastchester, N.Y.) hit a two-out single through the left side. Sarah Bagierek brought Johansson home with a double and then scored on senior Keir Stanford’s (Melrose,Mass.) single. Senior Caitlin McGaughey (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded an inside the park homerun, giving Springfield a 4-0 edge. The Pride’s offense exploded for nine runs on seven hits in the next inning.

MIT got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third frame. Adrianne Hee (Kailua, Hawaii) drew a two-out walk and then moved to second on Amada Poteet’s (Grass Valley, Calif) single through the left side. An error on Amanda Jason’s (Longmeadow, Mass.) hit to leftfield allowed Hee to score.

SC sophomore Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) hit 3-for-4 and recorded two RBI, while Jennifer Warnick (Millis, Mass.) went 2-for-3 and scored twice. In the circle, Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.)picked up her 10th win of the year after facing seven batters in two innings of work. Amanda Miller (Harrington Park, N.J.) closed the game, allowing two hits and striking out one.

Hee led the Engineers with a 1-for-2 performance, including a run and a walk. Katherine Bankert (Eden, N.Y.) lost her second decision of the season and Leah Bogsted (Levittown, N.Y.) scattered six hits and fanned two batters in four innings.

Like the opener, Springfield scored in the first inning. Angela Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) earned a walk and scored on Johansson’s double to leftfield. Following a single by Bagierek and a strikeout, McGaughey’s hit to centerfield plated Johansson. MIT answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Cheryl Texin (Lexington, Mass.) posted a ground-rule double and then advanced to third on Bogsted’s sacrifice hit. Corinne Vannatta (Denver, Colo.) picked up her first RBI of the day with a single.

The Pride extended its lead to 3-1 in the fourth. Keir Stanford led off with a single through the left side and later advanced to second on freshman Kasey Calderone’s (Pipersville, Pa.) sacrifice hit. Sophomore Lauren D’Arrigo (Lexington, Mass.) brought Stanford home on a single to right field. The Engineers responded in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own. Bogsted singled to shortstop and was awarded second on a throwing error. Vannatta plated her with a double to centerfield.

SC tacked on two runs in the sixth and added one more in the seventh to secure the win. Five different players recorded a RBI for the Pride. Johansson, Stanford, and McGaughey each went 2-for-4. Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) collected her ninth win as she yielded six hits and struck out two in three and 1/3 innings. Blackman surrendered two hits and fanned two to close the game.

For MIT, Texin and Vannatta each hit 2-for-3 for Tech. Bogsted received the loss in the circle, allowing 11 hits and one walk while striking out four.
