SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- April 20, 2007 -- Anthony Pizzo, a senior captain, represented Springfield College at the New England Basketball Coaches Association/Coaches vs. Cancer Division III Senior All-Star Game at Babson College this Sunday, April 22. The game took place at Babson's Staake Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m.
This year's event returned after a three-year absence and featured some of the finest players in the region, including Dan Wheeler and Tim McLauglin of NCAA Division III National Champion Amherst, and 2007 Josten's National Player of the Year Ryan Cain of WPI.
The rosters were selected by several committees made up of area college coaches and have been released by Stephen Brennan, the NEBCA Executive Secretary and Babson head coach.
A native of Clifton Park, N.Y., Pizzo has directed the show from his point-guard position for the past four years for Head Coach Charlie Brock at Springfield College. Late in the 2006-07 campaign, Pizzo became Springfield's all-time leader in assists. He finished with 523. He broke the previous record of 508 by Ramses Kelly from 1987 through 1991. Pizzo averaged 6.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, a team-high 5.0 assists, and 1.6 steals for the Pride in the 2006-07 campaign.
In addition to the All-Star Game, there was a free clinic run by several of the game participants and area coaches along with raffles that included Boston Celtics memorabilia, and a chance to take a half-court shot for $50,000.
