NEW LONDON, Conn., September 29, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore back Delaney Cantrall (Santa Paula, Calif.) netted her first goal of the season in what proved to be the game-winner as the Pride defeated Coast Guard this evening, 2-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

Cantrall's unassisted score came in the 37th minute of action (36:49), with just 8:11 left in the opening half. The victory improves SC to 6-2 overall on the season and a perfect 2-0 in conference play, as the Coast Guard Bears fall to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

It appeared that the Pride would go into the half with just the one-goal advantage, but senior midfielder Michelle Bongiovanni (West Springfield, Mass.) changed all that, scoring her second goal of the season with just 2:03 left in the first stanza (42:57). The tri-captain's goal was assisted by fellow tri-captain, Annemarie Goodwin (Springfield, Mass.), her team-leading fourth of the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) did not have to make a save in earning the win and the shutout, as she improves to 4-1 on the season, recording her second shutout in five decisions. SC outshot the Bears, 15-3 in the match, as the Pride did not allow a single Coast Guard shot on goal.

SC looks to make it three in a row overall and in the NEWMAC as the Pride hosts Wheaton College on Tuesday evening, October 3rd, in a crucial conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m. Last season, these two teams met in the NEWMAC title game at Wheaton, with SC advancing on penalty kicks to win the tournament crown and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament, its first-ever appearance in the field.
