Field Hockey Still Unbeaten in NEWMAC Play with a 3-0 Victory Over MIT
BoxscoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 7, 2006 – The Springfield College field hockey team defeated MIT, 3-0, this afternoon in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at SC’s Benedum Field.
With the win, Springfield is now 9-3 overall and 4-0 in NEWMAC play (tops in the league), while MIT falls to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
In today’s match, it was freshman forward Rebecca Gamble (Granby, Conn.) that got Springfield off on the right track, scoring a goal just 13:10 into the contest. The goal was assisted by sophomore forward Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.).
The 1-0 score stood up until the second half when the Pride struck again at the 42:13 mark. This time it was sophomore forward Allie Eisele (Walton, N.Y.) who found the back of the net. There was a rare double assist given on the play, to junior forward Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) and junior forward Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine).
SC’s final tally came with just 1:22 remaining and was provided by senior forward Christine Gibbins (Eden, N.Y.).
Two goalkeepers played one half each for the Pride in this game. Junior Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) came up with two saves in the first half, while junior Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.) made three saves in the second stanza.
For MIT, junior Alexa Herman had six saves as she played all 70 minutes.
Springfield next plays on Tuesday, October 10th, at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts WPI. MIT will play at Wellesley College on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
