SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 17, 2006 – Host Western New England College had three players shoot in the 70’s to capture the City of Springfield Championships by two strokes over Springfield College Tuesday at Veterans Golf Course.
The Golden Bears finished with a score of 313 followed by the Pride at 315. The AIC Yellow Jackets placed third at 341.
Western New England College sophomore Mike Roy and SC senior Andrew Wright (Hampden, Mass.) tied for medalist honors with scores of four-over par 76. There was no playoff because of the rain.
Three players tied for third with rounds of 78, WNEC senior E.J. Czajkowski, Pride sophomore Greg Levings (Averill Park, N.Y.), and AIC’s Mike McMillan.
Western New England College freshman Nick Kapinos was the only other player to break 80 on the wet afternoon. He shot a season-low 79 to finish ninth.
This was the first time in four years that the three schools were able to get together for the City Championships. WNEC won the last tournament in 2002.
“We didn’t play the tournament for a long time and I thought it would be nice to get everyone back together,” said veteran Western New England College coach Bill Downes. “Springfield will host the tournament next year at Franconia Golf Course and we’ll see how it goes from there.”
