Springfield College and basketball are nearly synonymous. After all, Springfield College is “The Birthplace of Basketball”. And the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, just 10 minutes away from this campus, where the original Basketball Hall of Fame was first housed.
It is safe to say that no other college has had as great an influence on the game as Springfield College. No less than nine individuals affiliated with SC have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, including inventor Dr. James Naismith. Others include John Bunn, Dr. Luther Gulick, Dr. Ferenc Hepp ’35, R. William Jones ’28, Ed Hickox ’14, Arthur Schabinger ’15, Amos Alonzo Stagg, and Dr. Ed Steitz G’48, ’63 D.P.E., all major contributors to the game.
Current Head Coach Charlie Brock, who notched his 350th coaching victory at SC during the 2005-2006 season, continues to elevate his name to new levels. In 2006, Brock was selected to two very prestigious positions – the Board of Directors in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee. He also continues to be a member of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee, which made national news in May, 2007 when it announced that the men's collegiate three-point line will be extended from 19' 9" to 20' 9" at the start of the 2008-09 season .
In 2007-08, the Pride were led by its floor general and NEWMAC Second Team selection Jamaal Gibbs. Gibbs' heroics on the court were captured and seen by millions as his 60-foot buzzer beater in double overtime at Clark was featured on ESPN. Also, in April of 2008, Springfield hosted a Nike Basketball Clinic on the newly-named James Naismith Court in Blake Arena. Featured coaches to speak included 2007 Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee Roy Williams of North Carolina, Billy Donovan of Florida, John Thompson III of Georgetown, and Tara VanDerveer of Stanford.
