Coyle Named USTFCCCA Division III National Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year New Orleans, La. -- August 8, 2011 -- Kevin Coyle of Springfield College has been named the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III National Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2011. About The Team
One of the top track & field programs in the Northeast, Springfield College won two consecutive Eastern College Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in 2002 and 2003.
Heading into the 2011-12 season, Springfield College has finished in the top four in 12 of the last 15 Division III New England Outdoor Championships and has continued to produced national champions in the past several seasons. Last season then-junior
Kevin Coyle won the Divsion III National Championship for the indoor long jump and earned All-America status for both the outdoor long jump and outdoor triple jump.
The team practices/competes at the Blake Track and Field facility, an eight-lane lighted facility with dual runways, 42-inch lanes, and new throwing circles and cages. It is considered to be one of the top facilities in New England for track & field. In September of 2008, Springfield College opened a new fieldhouse (including an indoor track), as well as a new wellness center and exercise science building.
Because of that, Track & Field took an additional upswing at Springfield College this season, hosting four track meets, including the New England Division III Championships in the new fieldhouse.
Springfield College has produced 66 All-Americans in track & field.
Steve Headley of nearby Wilbraham, Mass. won the 100 meter dash, took second in the 200 meter dash, and helped power the 4x100 meter relay team to a second place finish at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Headley had previously won the 100 meter dash national title in 2009, as well as capturing the 55 meter indoor title the same year.
The outdoor track & field team has an outstanding 80-10 record in dual meets (.888 winning percentage) since the 1997 season.

Head Coach Ken Klatka

Ken Klatka, enters his 36th season as head coach of the men’s track and field program in 2010-2011. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 433 wins, 141 losses, and two ties for an impressive .753 winning percentage. Under his direction, Kevin Coyle '12 won the 2011 Division III Indoor Long Jump National Championship.
