Hay Finishes Third in Long Jump, Rose Competes In Weight Throw at NCAA Division III Championships
Greencastle, Ind. - March 12, 2010 - Senior Nikki Hay kicked off the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in impressive fashion as she finished third in the long jump to earn All-American honors. Teammate Fatima Rose competed in the weight throw for the second-consecutive year but failed to make the finals.Completing her first of two events at nationals, Hay jumped a distance of 5.66 meters (18-7) as she took third place in the long jump.
Hay entered the event seeded 10th after a qualifying jump of 5.58m (18-3 3/4) which she set at the ECAC Championships on March 6. In the prelims, Hay recorded a leap of 17-11 1/2 (5.47m) to qualify for the finals.
In the finals, Hay made the most of her last jump as she registered a mark of 5.66 (18-7) to finish third in the country in the long jump. Entering her final jump, Hay's longest leap in the finals out of her previous five jumps had been 5.48 meters.
Skye Morrison from Wartburg College won the national championship in the long jump with a distance of 5.72 meters (18-9 1/4 ).
As for Rose, the sophomore competed at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships for the second time in her career. Rose failed to make the finals as her best throw on the afternoon was a distance of 15.29 meters (50-2).
Rose entered the NCAA Championships seeded ninth in the event. She she qualified for the national event with a season-best distance of 17.00 meters (55-9 1/4) at the ECAC Championships on March 6.
Holly Ozanich from Wisconsin Oshkosh won the national championship in the weight throw after registering the farthest throw in Division III this season and setting a Hollensteiner Track Record with a toss of 19.64 meters (64-5 1/4).

Jim Pennington enters his 27th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2010-2011. Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
