Nikki Hay Wins 2010 NCAA Indoor Triple Jump Championship
Greencastle, Ind. - March 13, 2010 - Senior Nikki Hay was crowned the 2010 NCAA Division III Champion in the Triple Jump Saturday morning at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at DePauw University. In her second-to-last jump, Hay leaped a Division III-best 11.98 meters, or 39-3 3/4 to claim the national title."Battling through an injury I was a little tentative on my first jump, but on my second jump I knew this was my final indoor meet so I went for it," said Hay. "With each jump I felt more and more confident in my knee. It's my senior year and I'm going to go all out. The first two years I didn't place. Last year I was fifth and this year I obtained my goal of a national championship."
This marks Springfield's College's third individual national champion in track and field in the last 12 months. Steve Headley won the men's indoor 55 meter championship last year and was then crowned the outdoor 100 meter champion in the spring.
The Norwalk, Conn. native capped off her sensational weekend as she previously finished third in the nation in the long jump on Friday afternoon after recording a distance of 5.66 meters or 18-7.
Hay entered the triple jump seeded sixth in the country after she reached season-best distance of 11.73 meters (38-6) on February 27 at the All New England Championships.
In the prelims of the triple jump on Saturday morning, Hay had the top distance in Flight 2 as she qualified for the finals with a mark of 11.55 meters, or 37-10 3/4.
The senior didn't disappoint in the finals as she recorded the farthest jump in country this indoor season with a distance of 11.98 meters, or 39-3 3/4. Hay outdistanced the top-seeded jumper in the event, Nakeisha Jones of Tufts University, who finished second with a 11.75, or 38-6 3/4.
Fittingly, Hay now owns the school record in the indoor triple jump after her national championship distance she registered today.

Jim Pennington enters his 27th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2010-2011. Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
