About The Team

Springfield College has a long and rich gymnastics tradition, which dates back to 1891. Today, the Pride is one of the top squads in the Northeast, winning five of the last seven New England Championship titles. Springfield will also host its 100th annual Home Show, a performance unique to the gymnastics world, at Blake Arena on campus in 2009.

At the 2009 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships, seven SC gymnasts received All-American honors a total of nine times. They included freshman Ty Evans in the vault (1st), all-around (2nd), and floor exercise (4th), Josh Fox in the all-around (4th), Kyle Bartgis in the parallel bars ((2nd), Andy Kelly in the parallel bars (4th), Mike Freundlich in the pommel horse (5th), Matt Bolognese in the still rings (6th), and Josh Spencer in the high bar (6th). Evans became Springfield's first USAG National Champion since Tim Goetz won the vault in 2004.

Also in 2009, Springfield claimed two ECAC/EIGL Champions, a first since Josh Chasse did so for SC in 2002 when he won the still rings. In '09, it was Bolognese winning the still rings, and Evans the vault.

As a team in 2009, Springfield placed 1st in the New England's, 4th in the USAG's, and 5th in the ECAC's. Springfield also defeated William & Mary for the first time in 27 years, after having beaten Army for the first time in 26 years the year before. SC has now beaten Army four straight times in the last two years.

Head coach Steve Posner has coached numerous All-Americans (135 all told) in his 27 seasons at Springfield College. He led the Pride to three straight USA Gymnastics national championships from 1991 to 1993. In 2007, Coach Posner won the coveted CGA Coaches Honor Award for his 25 years of meritorious service to collegiate gymnastics. And in 2008 and again in 2009, he was named the NACGC East Region Coach of the Year.
