Springfield, Mass. -- February 24, 2010 -- Two free throws by Malia Maier with 28 seconds left proved to be the difference as the Wellesley College women's basketball team upset Springfield College, 58-57, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game tonight at SC's Blake Arena. With the win, Wellesley, the #6-seed, advances to the NEWMAC semis at Babson Saturday at 3 pm. The Blue raise their record to 8-15 while Springfield, the #3 seed, finishes its season at 15-11. Wellesley, Mass. - February 20, 2010 - Kelly Murphy poured in a game-high and career-high 21 points to pace the Springfield College women's basketball team to a 77-61 win at Wellesley in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. Springfield closes out the regular season with a 15-10 overall record, including a 13-5 mark in league action. Read More.
In the 2007-08 campaign, Graves led the team comprised of two 1,000-plus career point scorers in seniors Christine Cotter and Tara McCarthy and eight freshmen to the NEWMAC Tournament Championship game. Of those eight freshmen, Rachelle Walker was honored as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year.
In 2005-06, the Pride achieved a 22-7 overall mark and recorded a 12-1 record in the NEWMAC, winning 12 straight conference games during the season. Forward Courtney Parvin earned NEWMAC Player of the Year honors that campaign.
During the 2004-2005 campaign, SC tied the school record for wins in a single season (25) and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III 'Elite Eight'. The Pride, which reached the 'Sweet 16' of the 2002 NCAA Division III Tournament, compiled a 25-4 record that year, including a school-record 17 consecutive wins while sweeping the NEWMAC regular-season and tournament titles.
Springfield College was ranked 19th in the final USA Today/ESPN/Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Poll of the 2002 season. That was the program's highest national ranking as a Division III program, and its best since the 1981-1982 season, when SC was ranked as high as fourth in the Division II national poll.
Entering her 19th season as head coach in 2009-10, Naomi Graves has directed her squads to an impressive 266-117 record (.695 winning percentage) since joining the Division III ranks in 1995. Graves has led the Pride to eleven post-season bids in the past 14 years, including five berths in the NCAA Division III Tournament in the past nine years.
