About The Team
Springfield College and basketball are nearly synonymous. After all, Springfield College is “The Birthplace of Basketball”. And the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, just 10 minutes away from this campus, where the original Basketball Hall of Fame was first housed.
It is safe to say that no other college has had as great an influence on the game as Springfield College. No less than nine individuals affiliated with SC have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, including inventor Dr. James Naismith. Others include John Bunn, Dr. Luther Gulick, Dr. Ferenc Hepp ’35, R. William Jones ’28, Ed Hickox ’14, Arthur Schabinger ’15, Amos Alonzo Stagg, and Dr. Ed Steitz G’48, ’63 D.P.E., all major contributors to the game.
Current Head Coach
Charlie Brock, who notched his 350th coaching victory at SC during the 2005-2006 season and who is now only six victories away from 400, continues to elevate his name to new levels. In 2006, Brock was selected to two very prestigious positions – the Board of Directors in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee. He also continues to be a member of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee, which made national news in May, 2007 when it announced that the men's collegiate three-point line would be extended from 19' 9" to 20' 9" at the start of the 2008-09 season .
In 2008-09, Springfield turned it on towards season's end, winning six of its last eight games. Highlighting the season was a 61-46 victory over New England's then-#1-ranked team, WPI, in the NEWMAC semifinals on the Engineers' home court. SC went on to lose to MIT in the finals, thus falling just one game short of earning the automatic NCAA Tournament berth. Junior forward
Pat Crean was named a First Team All-NEWMAC performer.
In 2007-08, the Pride were led by its floor general and NEWMAC Second Team selection Jamaal Gibbs. Gibbs' heroics on the court were captured and seen by millions as his 60-foot buzzer beater in double overtime at Clark was featured on ESPN. Also, in April of 2008, Springfield hosted a Nike Basketball Clinic on the then-newly-named James Naismith Court in Blake Arena. Featured coaches to speak included 2007 Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee Roy Williams of North Carolina, Billy Donovan of Florida, John Thompson III of Georgetown, and Tara VanDerveer of Stanford. Springfield also hosted the Nike Clinic for a second straight year in April of 2009. Featured coaches to speak at that Clinic included John Calipari of Kentucky, Bob Huggins of West Virginia, Rick Majerus of St. Louis, and Phil Martelli of St. Joseph's.
Springfield College is now the site of the Hoophall Classic each January. Sponsored by the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Hoophall Classic is now considered the finest high school tournament in the nation. In 2010, the nation's Top Seven boys' teams are all scheduled to appear.
