Wheaton Women, MIT Men Capture NEWMAC Track & Field Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 24, 2004 – The Springfield College men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams both finished second the 2004 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships held Saturday at Blake Track.

Wheaton captured the women’s team title for the sixth-straight season, while the MIT men won for the fourth-consecutive time.

On the men’s side, SC junior All-Americans Justin Welch (Woburn, Mass.) and Blake Gulino (Old Saybrook, Conn.) were event winners. Welch won the title in the high jump (1.91 m) and Gulino was first in the long jump (6.68m) for the second season-in-a-row. Freshman Jeff Cogan (Walworth, N.Y.) is the NEWMAC champion in the triple jump (13.06 m), and teammate Tetsuji Kambera (Osaka, Japan) cruised in the 5,000 meters (15:44.93). SC’s 4X400-meter relay team ran to first place (3:22.66).

The SC women threw a scare into defending national champion Wheaton this afternoon behind numerous excellent efforts. In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Emily Michaud (Woodland, Maine) ran second (40:48.84, All-New England qualifying time) and senior Jamie Bafaro (Mechanicsville, N.Y.) was second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.10). Sophomore Meg Young (Hurley, N.Y.) continued to emerge as one of New England’s top distance runners, finishing second in the 3000-meter steeplechase (11:35.33), while junior Leah Sullivan (Northboro, Mass.) was second in the shot put (12.01 m). The Pride was second in the 4:400-meter relay (4:07.97).
