Women's Lacrosse Downs Western New England, 9-7
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 20, 2004 - Springfield College sophomore forward Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) tallied three goals and an assist to lead the Pride to a 9-7 win over Western New England College, Tuesday, in women's lacrosse.
WNEC (10-3) scored the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead with 11:48 remaining in the half. SC answered with three unanswerd goals of its own by freshman forward Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) at 11:00, Carmody at 8:21, and junior forward Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) to tie the game with 6:41 to play in the half.
The Golden Bears looked to take a lead into halftime with a goal with 2:37 to play, but a goal by junior Erin Smith (Longmeadow, Mass. at the 1:55 mark tied the score, 4-4, after the first period.
Freshman Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) scored at 26:17, and Carmody added her second goal of the game as the Pride took a 6-4 lead with 25:35 to play in the second half. A WNEC goal at the 24:29 mark cut the SC lead to one, before Carmody's third tally put the Pride back up by a pair with 22:15 on the clock.
WNEC would answer again with another goal at 21:27, but a goal by junior midfielder Spring Silverman (Huntington Valley, Pa.) at 16:20, and another by Looney at 12:11 put the game out of reach as the Pride went on to its third-consecutive victory.
Springfield hosts Mount Holyoke on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. on Benedum Field in a first-round game of the NEWMAC Tournament.
