Women's Lacrosse Falls To Plymouth State, 15-12
BoxscoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 8, 2004 – Despite four goals from Springfield College sophomore forward Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.), Plymouth State defeated the Pride, 15-12, this evening on Benedum Field snapping SC’s six-game win streak.
Plymouth (7-0) senior midfielder Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) was credited with a game-high seven goals and an assist as the Panthers remained undefeated in 2004.
Plymouth got the game started with four unanswered goals, including a pair by senior midfielder Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.) to take a 4-0 lead with 23:38 remaining in the half.
SC (6-2) freshman midfielder Melissa Pond (Wayland, Mass.) put the Pride on the board at the 20:15 mark, before two more Plymouth goals, including the second of four goals in the game by sophomore forward Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.), increased the Panther lead to 6-1, with 12:06 on the clock.
Goals by Carmody at the 11:06 mark, and junior forward Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) brought the Pride within three goals with 8:27 remaining in the half. SC freshman forward Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) scored her first goal of the game at the 6:39 mark, before three unanswered goals by Sheridan, including two in a seven-second span, gave Plymouth a 9-4 lead with 2:39 remaining in the half. Eidse finished the first-half scoring with a tally with 29 seconds remaining to make the halftime score, 10-5, in favor of the visiting team.
The two teams traded two goals apiece to make the score 12-7 with 17:08 to play in the game. Back-to-back goals by Carmody and senior forward Libby Beinert (Williston, Vt.) brought SC within three goals, 12-9, with 12:52 on the clock.
Plymouth answered with a pair of goals of its own by Brown and Sheridan, to lead, 14-9, at the 6:44 mark. Beinert (at 6:04) and Looney (at 4:59) each tallied goals to make the score, 14-11, before Sheridan’s final goal with 4:26 remaining put the game out of reach for SC, which was only able to muster one more goal by Carmody at the 2:33 mark.
Sophomore goaltender Shannah Paddock (Dayton, Ohio) took her first loss of the season, despite making 10 saves for SC.
Springfield hosts Wheaton College at 1:00 on Saturday (April 10) in a rematch of last season’s NEWMAC Tournament championship game, won by the Lyons, 10-7.
