Wheaton Downs Women's Lacrosse, 8-6, In Battle Between Two Of NEWMAC's Top Teams

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 10, 2004 – Springfield College sophomore forward
Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.), tallied two goals and an assist, but it was Wheaton College handing the Pride its second-straight loss, 8-6, in a battle between two of the top teams in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) this afternoon on Benedum Field.
Wheaton (9-2, 5-0 NEWMAC) freshman forward
Anna Lombard (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was credited with two goals and an assist for the Lyons, in what was a rematch of last spring’s NEWMAC Tournament Championship game also won by Wheaton, 10-7.
The Lyons struck first as senior midfielder
Peri West (Weston, Mass.) netted a free-position goal at the 21:09 mark of the first half. SC freshman forward
Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) evened the game with a goal at 17:08, before two-straight Wheaton goals by sophomore forward
Julia Coit (South Portland, Maine) at 16:44, and Lombard gave the Lyons a two-goal edge, 3-1, with 13:22 on the clock.
The Pride fought back, with two goals in under a minute by Carmody at 11:21, and freshman forward
Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) at 10:26, to tie the game, 3-3.
Wheaton looked to grab momentum with the first half winding down, on goals by Coit at the 1:17 mark, and Lombard at 1:02, but a goal by junior forward
Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) off an assist from Carmody with three seconds on the clock, put SC down by only one, 5-4, at halftime.

Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) opened the second half with a goal at 26:47 to give Wheaton another two-goal advantage, 6-4. The Pride answered with a pair of goals in an 18-second span as Looney scored the first at the 19:09 mark, and Carmody added the second with 18:51 to play in the game.
While holding SC scoreless for the rest of the game, the Lyons added goals by Pisano at the 11:05 mark, and senior midfielder
Lauren Maynes (Woodstock, Vt.) at 7:13, to seal their seventh win in their last eight games and remain undefeated in the NEWMAC.

A.J. Vasilou (Middletown, Conn.) registered 12 stops in goal, while sophomore
Shannah Paddock (Dayton, Ohio) made 10 saves for the Pride.
