SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 16, 2005 – Springfield College senior outfielder John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.) was 4-for-6 with the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning as the Pride completed the sweep of Babson College, 4-3 and 8-7, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader this afternoon on Berry-Allen Field.
SC (10-13, 4-6 NEWMAC) junior Matt Rodovick (Stamford, Vt.) picked up his second win of the season, scattering nine hits and striking out eight in 6.1 innings of work in the opener. The Pride scored all four of its runs in the third inning, including a RBI double by senior catcher Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) and a RBI single by junior third-basemen Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Babson (10-13, 5-3 NEWMAC) made it a one–run game in the top of the sixth inning after a three-run homerun by junior catcher Ted Dziuba, but could not plate the equalizer as the Pride won the first game.
In the second game, Yvon went 4-for-6 with a run scored, while junior leftfielder Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored as the Pride came back for the victory.
Babson opened a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning, but two Pride runs in the bottom of the ninth, and two more in the bottom of the 10th gave SC the sweep of the Beavers.
