Baseball Tops WPI, 6-2, To Advance In NEWMAC Tournament
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 28, 2005 -Springfield College junior Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to catapult the third-seeded Pride past WPI, the No. 6 seed, 6-2, in the opening round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Tournament on Thursday played on Berry-Allen Field.
Springfield, which won its ninth-straight game, will take on Clark at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (April 30) in a semifinal game to be played at Babson. Seventh-seeded Clark upset second-seeded Babson, 3-0, in the today's other first-round action.
SC (17-13) erupted offensively in the sixth inning, led by junior Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who smashed a double, which began the Pride’s four-run inning. With two men on, junior catcher Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) drilled a two-run double to make the score 5-2. SC added an insurance run off the bat of junior right fielder Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) who grounded out to second, but plated the sixth and final run of the game.
Junior right-hander Matt Rodovick (Stamford, Vt.) pitched six innings, allowing two runs, while striking out three. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning, getting the final two batters to strike out. Senior right-hander Brian Royal (Orange, Mass.) threw three scoreless innings of relief and notched his first save of the season, while striking out two.
