Game 1: SC 7, MIT 3
Game 2: SC 1, MIT 0
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 3, 2004 – Springfield College junior centerfielder James Miner (Methuen, Mass.) went 3-for-3 including a home run in the seventh inning to seal the victory for the Pride as it defeated M.I.T., 7-3, in the first game of a doubleheader in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball game today at Berry-Allen Field.
SC junior shortstop Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) was 3-for-3, including two doubles and a pair of runs batted in. Senior right-hander Todd Royce (Chester, N.H.) tossed a complete game, giving up just five hits and striking out five en route to improving to 2-0.
M.I.T. senior right fielder David Ostlund was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The second game was a pitchers duel. Junior lefthander Kevin Davidson (Claremont, N.H.) fired a two-hit shutout as the Pride defeated M.I.T., 1-0, to complete the sweep.
SC (3-4, 3-2 NEWMAC) got on the board in the third inning thanks to a Basteri sacrifice fly that scored freshman designated hitter Matt Sullivan (Springfield, Mass.). The run was all Davidson (1-1) would need as he eased through the M.I.T. lineup, striking out seven for his first win.
MIT (7-7, 2-3 NEWMAC) received a strong outing from junior right-hander Mike Batty. Batty went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out four.
