Wheaton Sweeps Baseball, 3-2 And 10-0
Game 1: Wheaton 3, SC 2 (10 inns.)
Game 2: Wheaton 10, SC 0
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 10, 2004 – Wheaton junior right-hander Jon Jackson and senior right-hander Matt Partalo combined on a six-hitter as the Lyons edged Springfield College, 3-2, in 10 innings in the first game of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader this afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
The loss spoiled a tremendous effort by SC senior right-hander Todd Royce (Chester, N.H.), who scattered eight hits and did not allow an earned run in eight innings. Royce, who did not get the decision and remains 2-0, has yet to give up an earned run in 22 innings this season. SC junior Mike Burns (Wynanstkill, N.Y.) came off the bench to record two hits.
Royce and the Pride held a 1-0 lead with two outs in the seventh and final inning when Wheaton freshman Brendan Leonard scored on a passed ball. In the 10th inning, junior Rob Cipolla’s sacrifice fly scored sophomore Bryan Duplissie to give the Lyons a 2-1 edge. Junior Joe DeMartino doubled and scored what proved to be the winning run on an error.
In the bottom of the frame, the Pride closed to 3-2 after sophomore Joe Sgaglione’s (Massapequa, N.Y.) RBI single scored junior Scott Houghton (East Longmeadow, Mass.), but the rally fell short.
Game #2: Wheaton 10, Springfield 0
Wheaton senior right-hander Trevor Alexander fired a three-hit shutout as the Lyons completed the sweep with a 10-0 victory.
Jackson, who improved to 3-1 overall, struck out five, did not walk a batter, and allowed just four base runners. Wheaton moved to 13-11-1 overall and 7-1 in the NEWMAC.
Eight of the Lyons’ 10 runs were unearned due to seven SC errors in the contest. Junior Keith Cooper went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Duplissie was 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
The Pride fell to 3-8 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
