Baseball Scores Four In The 9th To Beat Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn., April 20, 2004 -- Springfield College scored four times in the top of the ninth inning and defeated Wesleyan, 13-9, in a non-conference baseball game on Andrus Field on Monday.
The Pride (8-8 overall), which extended its winning streak to five games, face Williams on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. on Berry-Allen Field.
Junior Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) celebrated his New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week Award by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore James Miner (Methuen, Mass.) also collected three hits and scored twice.
The teams set the tone early by combining to score sevens runs in the first inning. The Pride trailed 7-4 after two ininngs, but scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to close to within one (7-6). SC took a 9-7 lead in the sixth, thanks to Miner's solo home run and a two-run double by junior Mike Judge (Chatham, N.J.). The Cardinals responded by scoring once in the sixth and tied the game in the seventh at 9-9.
In the decisive ninth inning, junior Anthony Gorneault (Longmeadow, Mass.) opened the frame by bunting for a single and moving to second on an error. With one out, Basteri singled to right, scoring Gorneault to make it 10-9. Three batters later with the bases loaded, sophomore Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) ripped a two-run single to give SC a three-run advantage, then junior Scott Houghton (East Longmeadow, Mass.) singled to score junior John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.).
