Baseball Outlasts WPI, 14-11
WORCESTER, Mass., April 21, 2005 – Springfield College senior third baseman Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) went 4-for-5 and had three RBI to lead the Pride in a come-from-behind victory over WPI, 14-11, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game played on Alumni Field.
SC senior first baseman John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.) erupted offensively for the Pride going 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored, while junior designated hitter Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) went 2-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Beattie singled home the go ahead run during the eighth inning and moved up on a wild pitch only to have junior shortstop Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) single making the score 12-11. The Pride added two more insurance runs in the ninth inning.
Junior right-hander Rob Smaldone (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) picked up his first win of the season, while freshman Joe Carlos (Wilbraham, Mass.) retired all three batters in the ninth recording his second save.
The Engineers were led by third baseman Nick Angelini who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, including his fourth homerun in three days.
The Pride (13-13, 5-5) host conference-rival MIT in a twinbill on Saturday (April 23) starting at 12:00 pm.
