Baseball Extends Winning Streak To Four

WORCESTER, Mass., April 18, 2004 – Springfield College extended its winning streak to four games on Sunday in impressive fashion, beating Clark, 12-4, and WPI, 8-6, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action.
Against Clark, the Pride jumped out to a 9-0 lead after five innings. Sophomore third baseman Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a home run, and junior Mike Burns (Wynanstkill, N.Y.) collected three hits and scored four times. Junior Anthony Gorneault (Longmeadow, Mass.) was 4-for-5 with a double and a triple.
SC erupted for five runs in the fifth, including a three-run blast by junior John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.).
Senior right-hander Todd Royce (Chester, N.H.) pitched 7.1 innings to pick up his third win. He extended his streak with out allowing an earned run to 29 innings before giving up two in the eighth inning. Royce is 3-0 with an 0.61 earned-run average.
In game two, Yvon was 3-for-5 with four runs batted in and Burns collected three hits as the Pride took an 8-6 decision. Junior left-hander Kevin Davidson (Claremont, N.H.) scattered seven hits over eight innings to even his mark at 2-2.
SC jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, sparked by a two-run single by Yvon. Yvon added a critical two-run double in the ninth inning that proved to be the game-winning hit.
