Baseball Falls Short To Brandeis, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass., March 31, 2005 –Springfield College senior pitcher Brian Royal (Orange, Mass) pitched seven strong innings, scattering nine hits and only allowing two runs, but it was Brandeis University earning a hard fought victory, 2-1, in a classic pitchers duel played on Stein Diamond.

Royal (0-2) struck out seven batters and walked a pair, but was out dueled by Brandeis rookie Tyler Robinson and senior Bryan Lambert who held the Pride to only six hits and one run. Robinson got the start and allowed only four hits in 4.2 innings of work and striking out six in the process.

The Pride’s offensive attack was silent up until the fifth inning when freshman shortstop Rory Pasini (Springfield, Mass) singled and stole second leading to Adam Tarquini’s (Fishkill, N.Y.) single up the middle to even the score at one. The Pride’s bats fell silent after the fifth inning and never got a runner past second base in the final innings.

The Judges scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when junior shortstop Zach Golden led off with a double and eventually scored on sophomore third basemen Jeff Bourdon’s single through the drawn-in infield for the game-winning hit.

The Pride falls to 5-4, while the Judges improve to 6-5.
