Baseball Splits With Babson On Saturday

Game 1: SC 1, Babson 0

Game 2: Babson 4, SC 1

WALTHAM, Mass., March 27, 2004 – Springfield College senior right-hander Todd Royce (Chester, N.H.) fired a three-hit shutout as the Pride defeated Babson, 1-0, in the opening game of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader this afternoon at Govini Field.

Royce, who struck out two and walked two in his first start of the ’04 campaign, won a spectacular duel with Babson’s Jason Kosow, who allowed just three hits and struck out seven. Junior centerfielder Anthony Gorneault (Longmeadow, Mass.) drilled an RBI double in the first inning that proved to be the difference.

With one out in the opening frame, SC sophomore rightfielder Joe Sgaglione (Massapequa, N.Y.) walked and stole second. With two out, Gorneault ripped a double to score Sgaglione.

In game two, Babson’s Jim Burke yielded six hits and struck out six as the Beavers (7-6) won, 4-1, to earn a split.

For the Pride, sophomore catcher Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
