Clark Holds Off Baseball, 9-8
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 2, 2004 -- Springfield College junior designated hitter Mike Judge (Chatham, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and pair of runs batted in, but Clark capitalized on two three-run home runs to defeat the Pride, 9-8, this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball game at Berry-Allen Field.
Clark (8-7, 2-2 NEWMAC) jumped on the board early thanks to junior third baseman Todd Mathewson, who hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Senior Mike Burnham first baseman also contributed a three-run home run in the fifth inning, and went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Clark junior right-hander Eamonn McDonough pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief for the Cougars to pick up his second win.
SC (1-4, 1-3 NEWMAC) collected 16 hits. The Pride, which scored three runs in the ninth inning, left the tying and winnings runs stranded. SC sophomore right fielder James Miner (Methuen, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior shortstop Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) also went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one run batted in.
The Pride continues NEWMAC play tomorrow (April 3) hosting M.I.T. in a doubleheader at Berry Allen Field at 12:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Cambridge, Mass.
