Baseball Finishes Season With 4-2 Win Over Amherst
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 3, 2005- Springfield College senior first baseman John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.) smashed a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Pride over Amherst College, 4-2, in baseball action played on Berry-Allen Field.
The Pride scored all four runs during the sixth inning. Senior Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.), who went 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored, led off the inning with a walk before advancing to third on a single by junior designated hitter Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.). After a walk by junior center fielder Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.), senior third baseman Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) reached on a fielder’s choice knocking in Gorneault to make the score 2-1. Beattie broke the game open with the two-run double and later scored the Pride’s final run on a passed ball.
On the hill, junior right-hander Matt Rodovick (Stamford,Vt.) threw eight strong innings allowing just four hits, while striking out four. Junior relief pitcher Rob Smaldone (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) notched his third save on the season closing out the ninth.
Lord Jeff (17-5) sophomore center fielder Thomas Scott (Randolph, N.J.) went 1-for-4 on the day and recorded an RBI.
The Pride finish the season with a 20-15 record, winning 12 of its last 14 games, including a runner-up finish in the NEWMAC Tournament..
