Coast Guard Rallies Past Baseball, 4-2
NEW LONDON, Conn., April 8, 2004 – Springfield College sophomore Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) drilled a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning but the Pride lost at Coast Guard, 4-2, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game Thursday.
The Bears’ Mike Jarbeau allowed just three hits and two earned runs over 8 2/3 innings and Cory Anderson got the final batter to line into a double play to lift Coast Guard to 3-4 in the conference.
The Pride (3-6, 3-5) led 2-0 after Tarquini’s solo homer and sophomore Joe Sgaglione's (Massapequa, N.Y.) RBI single in the fifth. Sgaglione’s hit, however, was the final hit the Pride would get in the game.
Coast Guard scored all four of its runs in the fifth as Lee Jones walked to leadoff, Cory Anderson singled and Ryan Crose’s sacrifice bunt was thrown away allowing Jones to score. Nick Anderson tied the game on an RBI ground out and Chuck Arena gave Coast Guard the lead with an RBI single. Arena came around and scored the Bears final run on a passed ball to cap the scoring.
Jarbeau, who walked six and struck out seven, walked two of the first three hitters in the ninth and then Anderson came on and got Sgaglione to line into a double play to shortstop Bret Nichols to end the game.
