Softball Wins Two Over WPI, 6-5, 2-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 16, 2005 – Springfield College senior catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.) drove in the game-winning run as the Pride defeated WPI, 2-1 for a sweep of the Engineers in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader this afternoon at Potter Field. The Pride also defeated WPI in the opening game, 6-5 in eight innings.

Trailing 2-0 in the third inning of the first game, senior outfielder Laurie Cersosimo (West Hartford, Conn.) led a four-run Pride rally hitting a two-run single to make the score 4-2.

SC senior Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) added a RBI triple in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 5-2, but the Engineers tied the game with three runs in the next frame.

SC freshman pitcher Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.) scored the game-winning run off a WPI throwing-error while picking up her second victory of the season in relief.

In the second game, SC senior pitcher Brittany Dielemans (Middlebury, Conn.) threw a complete-game two hitter, struck out seven, and allowed just one earned run. The one earned run came off a solo homer by WPI freshman Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, Mass.) in the second inning.

SC junior designated player Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) hit an RBI single to the tie game, 1-1, in the seventh inning before SC freshman Lauren D’Arrigo (Lexington, Mass.) scored the winning run off an Edwards sacrifice fly.

Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Parker (Rochester, Mass.) tossed a solid six innings for the Engineers, allowing just one Pride hit before being taken out with a 1-0 lead.

SC will travel to WNEC, Wednesday (April 20) for a double-header beginning at 3:30 pm.
