AMHERST, Mass., April 30, 2003 – Springfield College All-American senior first baseman Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) went 2-for-4 from the plate with a two-run first inning home run to center field and a fourth inning solo homer to right center as the Pride downed Amherst, 7-1, in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon at Hill Field.
All-conference sophomore pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) allowed one run and two hits over seven innings with three strikeouts. Freshman pinch-hitter Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) smashed a three-run home run to cap a four-run fourth inning.
SC got another excellent pitching performance in the second game as sophomore Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) scattered three hits and one run as the Pride took game two, 7-1. At the plate, Brucker was 2-for-4.
Sophomore catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y. smashed a two-run homer to left center in the third. She was 2-for-5 on the afternoon.
Edwards established school records for career home runs (16) single season home runs (10).
The Pride banged out 16 hits including a 4-for-5 performance from Gerrish, a 2-for-5 effort from all-conference sophomore right fielder Laurie Cersosimo (W. Hartford, Conn.), and a 2-for-3 afternoon from sophomore left fielder Lori Baumann (Pittsfield, Mass.).
