Wheaton Sweeps Softball, 4-3 And 6-0
NORTON, Mass., April 19, 2003-- Wheaton junior Lori Hill's double in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a three-run comeback and propelled the Lyons to a 4-3 victory over Springfield College in game one of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Clark Field.
In game two, the Lyons beat the Pride, 6-0, to clinch Wheaton's fifth consecutive conference regular season title. Wheaton moved to 29-6 overall and 14-2 in the NEWMAC. By winning the regular season title, the Lyons gain home field advantage through the league tournament.
SC, which saw its 12-game win streak to an end, fell to 22-8 and 12-2 in the league.
SC started quikcly in game one. SC sophomore Laurie Cersosimo (West Hartford, Conn.) cracked a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the first to give the Pride a 3-0 lead. Down 3-1 in the sixth, Wheaton senior co-captain Rachael Powers led off the inning with a double, followed by a single from Hill. Junior Amanda Dow-Allen sent a line drive up the middle that ricocheted into left field off Springfield pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.). Two runs scored on the play, but Pearson retired the next two batters to end the Lyons' threat.
After retiring the side in the top of the seventh, junior Brianna Shawah reached first for Wheaton on a SC error in the bottom of the frame. Shawah advanced to third on two passed balls and following a strikeout, sophomore Sarah Malloy walked. Powers then flew out to second, setting up Hill's late-game heroics.
Cersosimo accounted for all of Springfield's offense with two hits and three RBI.
In game two, as the Lyons quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Malloy. In the second, the Lyons loaded the bases courtesy of a hit and two SC errors. Dow-Allen then drew a walk to bring home one run and junior Carmella Ranieri knocked home another with a sacrifice fly to put Wheaton up 3-0. In the fifth after an RBI double by Malloy, Powers hit her second home run of the season for a 6-0 Wheaton lead.
