Softball Advances In ECAC Tournament With 2-0 Win Over Suffolk University

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. , May 7, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout as top-seeded Springfield College downed eighth-seeded Suffolk University, 2-0, in the first round of the Eastern Conference Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Softball Tournament this afternoon on Senior Day at Potter Field.
Pearson also went 2-for-3 from the plate with a first inning double and a run scored and earned her 20th win of the season, striking out five.
Senior first baseman Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) drove in Pearson in the first with a sacrifice fly to left field. Senior centerfielder Jill Roach (S. Hadley, Mass.) moved Pearson from second to third with a sacrifice bunt. Roach had two sacrifices bunts in the game, increasing her team-lead in that category to 18.
The Pride’s second run came when sophomore third baseman Carrie Boyce (New Britain, Conn.) , who was pinch running for freshman designated player Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) , scored when the freshman shortstop Caitlin McGaughey (S. Windsor, Conn.) singled.
The Rams finish the season with a record of 24-13. The Pride will face the winner of the game between fifth-seeded Southern Maine and fourth-seeded Rhode Island College on Saturday at Potter Field.

Head Coach Julie Perrelli

Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
