Softball Engineers Doubleheader Sweep Of WPI, 7-2, 8-0
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 14, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to centerfield and retired all nine batters she faced as the Pride downed WPI, 7-2, in the first game of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader this afternoon at Potter Field.Pearson, who was named NEWMAC Player of the Week today, struck out four on her way to her eighth win of the season and combined with sophomore Missy Edwards (Calverton, R.I.), who picked up the save, for the victory. Edwards went 2-for-2 with a double down the left field line to drive in a run in the fourth inning and a solo homer to dead centerfield in the sixth. Sophomore right fielder Laurie Cersosimo (W. Hartford, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
WPI junior catcher Sarah Duford went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In game two, Edwards continued her dominance at the plate, smashing her fifth home run of the season to the left field power alley in the first inning as SC went on to win 8-0 in five innings. The Pride added three runs in the second and fourth innings.
Senior first baseman Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) had two RBI and a run while Pearson added two runs scored. Sophomore pitcher Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I) scattered four hits over five innings with five strikeouts.

Head Coach Julie Perrelli
Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
