Softball Advances To ECAC Division III New England Tournament Final

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 10, 2003 – Top-seeded Springfield College, along with second-seeded Plymouth State and third-seeded Coast Guard all advance to the final day of competition at the 2003 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Softball Tournament held this afternoon at Potter Field. Southern Maine was eliminated from the field this afternoon. Play will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning when Coast Guard takes on Plymouth State in an elimination game for the right to play Springfield College in the finals. The Coast Guard/Plymouth State winner would have to beat Springfield College twice on Sunday to win the championship.

Springfield 3, Southern Maine 2
With the score knotted at 1-1 in the sixth, Southern Maine junior first baseman Jordan Gatcomb (Wells, Maine) smashed a line-drive, solo home run to centerfield to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Springfield College responded in the bottom of the inning when senior centerfielder Jill Roach (S. Hadley, Mass.) scored on a single from sophomore catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.).

Springfield sophomore left fielder Lori Baumann (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh. Baumann reached on a bunt single to third base and advanced to third when sophomore pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) doubled off the left field fence.

Plymouth State 1, Coast Guard 0
Plymouth State received a dominating performance from sophomore pitcher Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.). Jeffs scattered four hits and struck out 19 batters en route to her 24th win and 13th shutout of the season.

The Panthers scored the game’s only run in the fifth inning when senior outfielder Steph Marsland (Cumberland, R.I.) was called safe at home on a fielder’s choice from junior shortstop Michelle Knox (Gilmartin, N.H.).

Coast Guard 3, Southern Maine 2
Coast Guard sophomore pitcher Jen Paulson (Richmond, R.I.) picked up her 20th win of the season allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

The third inning proved to be the deciding frame as Coast Guard sophomore catcher Heidi Miller (Norco, Calif.) doubled to drive in freshman first baseman Stephanie Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas). Miller later scored the game-winning run when she came home on a double from sophomore centerfielder Adrian Harris (Hartfield, Va.).

Springfield 5, Plymouth State 4 (12 innings)
Trailing 1-0, Springfield College staged a seventh inning rally when sophomore third baseman Carrie Boyce (New Britain, Conn.) drove in pinch runner Jen Warnick (Millis, Mass.) with a single down the right field line to send the game to extra frames.

In the eighth inning, the Panthers managed two runs in top of the inning. In the bottom half of the frame, senior first baseman Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) hammered a two run, game-tying home run to centerfield to continue the contest.

The teams traded runs in the tenth and then played scoreless softball until the bottom on the 12th when pinch runner Danielle Lachance (Spaulding, N.H.) scored on a bloop single to shallow left field from sophomore left fielder Lori Baumann (Pittsfield, Mass.).

Head Coach Julie Perrelli

Julie Perrelli Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
