Springfield 6, Mount Holyoke 4 (8 innings) - Boxscore

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 24, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.) smashed a two-run walk-off home run over the right-center field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the second-seeded Pride a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over seventh-seeded Mount Holyoke College in the first round of the 2003 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball tournament this afternoon at Potter Field.

With her game-winning blast, Edwards ties the school single season and career home run records. Edwards nine homers this season ties Kerri Camuso’s single season record set in 1996. Edwards also matches Camuso’s 15 career long balls established from 1994 through 1996.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, SC was down to its last strike with a runner on first base when sophomore pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) smashed her sixth home run of the season to straight away centerfield to knot the contest at 3-3.

Mount Holyoke got a run in the top of the eighth when freshman shortstop Liz Colby scored on a fielder’s choice from freshman designated player Liz Dennis to give the Lyons a 4-3 lead.

The Pride answered immediately in the bottom of the inning when senior centerfielder Jill Roach (S. Hadley, Mass.) scored on senior first baseman Ali Gerrish’s (Plymouth, Mass.) triple to the right field fence to tie the score at 4-4. Gerrish scored on Edwards home run.
