Softball Sweeps Coast Guard In NEWMAC Action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 15, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore left fielder Laurie Cersosimo (W. Hartford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead the first-place Pride to a 4-1 win over Coast Guard in the first game of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader this afternoon at Potter Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, SC senior first baseman Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) scored the game-tying run on a Cersosimo single. Sophomore left fielder Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) followed with a single to drive in sophomore catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.) to give the Pride a 2-1 lead. Cersosimo added a two-run double the following inning.
Sophomore pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) threw her ninth complete game of the season, scattering five hits and one run over seven innings with two strikeouts. Coast Guard sophomore pitcher Jen Paulson struck out six batters over six innings.
In the second game, SC’s Edwards drilled a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth as the Pride rallied from a three-run deficit to win 7-6.
The Bears got on the board first in the second inning when sophomore catcher Heidi Miller scored on sophomore centerfielder Adrian Harris’s double to left center. Harris then scored on a Paulson single to make the score 2-0.
Coast Guard added another run before the Pride exploded for seven runs in the fifth highlighted by an Edwards’ grand slam home run over the right field fence. SC scored all of its runs with two outs. The Bears made it interesting in the top of the seventh when freshman shortstop Stephanie Adams hit a three-run homer to centerfield to close the gap to one run.

Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
