Softball Swept By Tufts, 1-0 and 7-1
MEDFORD, Mass., March 26, 2003 - Springfield College sophomore Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) pitched seven shutout innings but Tufts scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth and defeated the Pride, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon in Medford.
In the second game, the Jumbos beat the Pride, 7-1, despite two hits and a run batted in by senior All-American Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.).
Game one was a pitcher’s duel between Tufts sophomore Caroline Grieco and Pearson. The teams were tied 0-0 after seven innings. With the international tie-breaker rule in effect (the inning starts with a runner on second), SC was unable to score in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Tufts freshman Jess Barrett laid down a sacrifice bunt to move along freshman Laura Spring to third. Senior Nikki Blotner’s RBI single scored Spring.
This was the first loss of the season for Pearson, who entered the game with a 4-0 mark. Sophomore Laurie Cersosimo (West Hartford, Conn.) had a double for SC.
In the nightcap, the Jumbos, sparked by sophomore Katie Smith’s grand slam, scored five times in the bottom of the first en route to a 7-1 win.
The Pride scored its lone run in the top of the third on a RBI single by Gerrish. Pearson came on in relief to pitch six innings, allowing no runs and two hits.
