BRIDGEWATER, Mass., April 16, 2003 - Springfield College sophomore pitcher
Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) drove in the only two runs of the game and allowed only two hits over seven innings pitched as the Pride downed host Bridgewater State, 2-0, in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon at Alumni Field.
Pearson, who has not lost since March 27th against Keene State, improves to 11-2 on the season.
The Pride got on the board in the fifth inning when freshman shortstop
Caitlin McGaughey (South Windsor, Conn.) roped a leadoff single to left field. Pinch runner Lori Baumann (Pittsfield, Mass.) came on and stole second. Baumann then scored on Pearson's single to left to make the score 1-0. Pearson drove in McGaughey in the seventh to give SC an insurance run.
The second game got off to a quick start with both teams scoring twice in their first at bats. Pearson led off the game by reaching first on an error. She was later drove home on a single to right centerfield from sophomore catcher
Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.). After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Edwards scored on sophomore right fielder Laurie Cersosimo's (W. Hartford, Conn.) single to give the Pride an early 2-0 lead.
The Bears answered in the bottom half of the inning when junior catcher Natalie Ardagna tripled to score freshman right fielder Allyson Lipsett. Sophomore second baseman Jenni Brooks followed with a single to score Ardagna knotting the score at 2-2.
SC added two more in the second. Junior left fielder
Krisinda Dielmans (Middlebury, Conn.) scored on a Pearson double to right and Pearson was brought home when senior centerfielder
Jill Roach (S. Hadley, Mass.) singled to left.
Bridgewater tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth. SC senior first baseman
Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) scored the winning run on junior
Missy Rupprecht's (Braintree, Mass.) single to right center to clinch the game for the Pride, 5-4.
SC improves its record to 18-6 and have now won 12 of their last 13 games.
