Softball Takes Two At Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass., April 22, 2003 -- Springfield College sophomore Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) tossed a four-hitter as the Pride edged Smith, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Monday.
SC sophomore Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.) drilled a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to give the Pride a 3-1 lead. After the Pioneers rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the frame, senior Nicole Coromato (Utica, N.Y.) drove in sophomore pinch runner Lori Bauman (Pittsfield, Mass.) in the top of the seventh with what proved to be the winning run.
In game two, Pearson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, and senior All-American Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI as SC rallied for a 9-6 win. The Pride scored five times in the fifth inning to overcome a 5-4 deficit.
