Softball Sweeps NEWMAC Doubleheader Over Clark
Game 1: SC 5, CU 2
Game 2: SC 2, CU 1
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 5, 2005 – Springfield College freshman Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI in the first game, as the Pride swept a double header against Clark University today at Potter Field. SC won game one 5-2 while holding on for a 2-1 game-two victory.
In game one, Clark jumped out to an early 1-0 in the first inning, but a two-run triple by junior Caitlin McGaughey’s (S. Windsor, Conn.) in the bottom half of the inning gave the Pride a lead it would not relinquish. McGaughey, who had a run and two RBI, along with senior Laurie Cersosimo (West Hartford, Conn.) each went 2-for-3 in the first game.
Senior pitcher Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter, allowing no earned runs and striking out four to earn her fifth win of the season.
Senior pitcher Brittany Dielemans (Middlebury, Conn.) allowed just one earned run over seven innings on three hits, as SC won the second game 2-1.
A Cersosimo sacrifice fly in the first-inning made it a 1-0 game, before freshman pinch runner, Lauren D’Arrigo (Lexington, Mass.) scored on three Clark passed balls in the fourth inning, for the eventual game-winner.
An RBI single by sophomore Lauren Ackein (Tacoma, Wash.) in the seventh inning for Clark ended Dieleman’s shutout, but was not enough as the Pride went on to victory.
SC will return to action tomorrow, hosting a double-header against Williams College, beginning at 4 pm.
