Softball Splits Doubleheader At WNEC
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 20, 2005 – Springfield College senior catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.) crushed two homeruns as the Pride handed Western New England College (WNEC) just its third loss of the season, 5-2, at WNEC Softball Field in the first game of a doubleheader. The Golden Bears would bounce back to take game two, 5-1.
WNEC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but that would be all SC senior Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I) would allow, en route to picking up her ninth victory of the season. Brucker tossed a complete game and struck out four, while scattering eight hits.
Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, Edwards led off with a a solo shot. Junior infielder, Kier Stanford (Melrose, Mass.) contributed to the four-run third inning with a three-run homer that drove in senior Lori Bauman (Pittsfield, Mass.) and junior Caitlin McGaughey (South Windsor, Conn.) to put the Pride up, 4-2, to cut the lead in half.
Edwards second homerun, which extended her school-record total to 20, put the Pride up 5-2.
Freshman infielder Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) accounted for half of SC’s hit total in the second game of the double header, going 3-for-4, and also drove in the Pride’s lone run.
Freshman pitcher Alex Patterson tossed a complete game for the Golden Bears, allowing just one earned run as she picked up her 10th victory of the season.
