Softball Advances To NEWMAC Final With 5-3 Win Over Coast Guard
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 28, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) crushed a three-run home run, her seventh of the season, in the sixth inning to give the Pride a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Coast Guard in the semifinal of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball Tournament this afternoon at Potter Field.SC advances to face Wheaton on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Norton, Mass., in the championship. The Pride needs to sweep a doubleheader from the Lyons to claim the automatic berth to the Division III NCAA Tournament.
The Pride opened the scoring in the first when senior first baseman Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) scored on sophomore right fielder Laurie Cersosimo’s (W. Hartford, Conn.) single up the middle. The Bears answered the following inning with a run of their own to knot the score at 1-1.
In the third, Coast Guard freshman shortstop Stephanie Adams lined a two-run home run that curved fair around the left field foul pole to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
The Pride responded when Cersosimo smashed a solo homer over to right center field to lead off the sixth inning. Later in the inning, with one out and sophomore left fielder Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) and senior second baseman Nicole Coromato (Utica, N.Y.) on base, Pearson drove the first offering from Coast Guard pitcher Kelly Ponts over the centerfield fence to complete the comeback.

Head Coach Julie Perrelli
Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
