Softball Engineers Doubleheader Sweep Of MIT, 23-0 and 8-0
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 29, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore pitcher Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) hurled a complete game, no-hit shutout to lead the Pride to an 8-0 victory over MIT in the second game of a doubleheader in both team’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener this afternoon at Potter Field.The Pride took the first game, 23-0, with both games being called after the fifth inning.
Brucker is the first SC pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Nan Duga accomplished the feat in 2001.
SC got on the board first in the second game, when sophomore right fielder Laurie Cersosimo (W. Hartford, Conn.) and senior first baseman Ali Gerrish (Plymouth, Mass.) scored a pair of runs in the third inning off of two Engineer errors to give the Pride a 2-0 lead. SC never looked back, adding one run in fourth and five in the fifth. Cersosimo and senior second baseman Nicole Coromato (Utica, N.Y.) each had two RBI.
Senior pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, Mass.) threw a complete game shutout and smashed a three-run home run over the right field fence to pace the Pride in the first game.
Springfield scored early and often and featured a balanced offensive attack. Pearson and freshman designated player Amanda Johannson (Leominster, Mass.) each recording four RBI, while Cersosimo and catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.) contributed with three RBI apiece. Edwards’ three RBI came on a fourth inning home run. The Pride scored in every inning and each member of Springfield’s starting lineup registered at least one hit.

Head Coach Julie Perrelli
Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
