Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With MCLA, 12-1, 11-3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 12, 2005 – Springfield College junior designated player Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) led the Pride to a pair of victories over Mass. College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) by going 6-for-7, including two home runs and 10 RBI, today at Potter Field.
A four-run first inning capped by a Johannson two-run homer gave SC a 4-1 lead and they would never look back. Freshman second baseman Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) and senior outfielder Lori Baumann (Pittsfield, Mass.) each went 2-for-3 and contributed RBI singles in the first inning rally.
Johannson increased the Pride’s lead to 6-1 with a two-run single in the second inning. Senior pitcher Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) and Johannson each had RBI doubles, as the Pride later batted around and scored six runs in the third inning, en route to its 12-1 victory.
Brucker pitched five innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out four.
In the second game, Johannson hit her second home run of the day in the first inning, driving in three. MCLA later tied the game up at 3-3 by scoring three in the top of the third.
SC scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped by a two-run single from freshman outfielder Lauren D’Arrigo (Lexington, Mass.), to give the Pride a 7-3 lead.
The Pride went on to score a run in the fourth, and three in the fifth, to down the Trailblazers in the second game, 11-3.
SC will host Bridgewater St. tomorrow at Potter Field, in a double header beginning at 3:30 pm.
