Softball Splits Double-Header With Ninth-Ranked Wheaton

NORTON, Mass., April 3, 2005 – An RBI double in the top of the last inning by Springfield College senior Laurie Cersosimo (West Hartford, Conn.) scored the go-ahead run as SC gave ninth-ranked Wheaton College its first NEWMAC loss of the season, 4-2, at Clark Field in the second game of a makeup doubleheader.

SC freshman Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Wheaton answered back in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, to go ahead 2-1. Junior Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) started the seventh inning comeback for the Pride by knocking in senior Lori Baumann (Pittsfield, Mass.) to tie the game up at two. SC junior Jennifer Warnick (Millis, Mass.) pinch ran for Johansson and scored the go-ahead run on Cersosimo’s double.

In the first game of the doubleheader, SC scored first, using a Wheaton error and back-to-back singles from Baumann and junior Caitlin McGaughey (South Windsor, Conn) in the top half of the first-inning. The Lyons tied the game in the fourth and put the game out of reach in the fifth frame, scoring four runs on four hits and two errors, including a homerun by sophomore Jessica Depolito that gave Wheaton a 5-1 lead. The Lyons would tack on another run for a 6-1 victory.
